In this episode of the Legal Zone we have another amazing guest.  Joining us is Aristotle Theresa, a civil rights attorney that focuses on zoning and administrative law and is a Principal at Stoop Law. Stoop Law, located in the Anacostia neighborhood of South East Washington, D.C. has pioneered gentrification laws leading to the adjustment of best practices in the D. C. office of planning and for land developers.

Aristotle is an adjunct professor having taught classes on land use, urban planning and critical race theory and is a 4th generation Washington D.C. resident.

In this episode's #teachablemoments, we discuss gentrification and Planned Urban Development.

What is Gentrification?

Gentrification is the process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing, and attracting new businesses, sometimes displacing current inhabitants in the process.

Planned Urban Development

The overall goal of a PUD process is to permit flexibility in zoning regulations as long as the PUD offers

  • A commendable number or quality of public benefits and;
  • Protects and advances the public health, safety,  welfare and convenience of the people.

Join us in this great discussion that has affected many neighborhoods.
